THE GOSPEL / ROMANS 01:16

SO WHAT IS
THE GOSPEL?

01 / THE BAD NEWS

To understand and appreciate the good news, we first have to understand the bad news. Although God created us good and in his image, we chose to sin, resulting in both physical and spiritual death.

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned”

ROMANS / 05:12 · ESV

We have a sin problem, and we deserve the just punishment for our sins against a holy and perfect God. No amount of effort on our part can fix this problem or pay the debt we owe.

02 / THE GOOD NEWS

Jesus came to save sinners.

Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live and paid the debt we owed. He offers salvation as a free gift, received simply by faith.

He accomplished this through his death on the cross, receiving the punishment we deserved, and by rising from the dead three days later, defeating sin, death, and the grave.

“the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith…”

ROMANS / 03:22–25 · ESV (EXCERPT)

This gift is available to anyone who receives it by faith, trusting in the finished work of Jesus and his wonderful promise of eternal life.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

JOHN / 03:16 · ESV
